You don’t absolutely need an attorney for an arraignment, although it is a good idea.
If you don’t have a lawyer with you, the arraignment process is very simple.
- Wait for your name to be called for arraignment.
- Stand up before the court as instructed, while they read the formal charges against you.
- Plead not guilty.
- Ask the court for a copy of the police report! Your attorney will want this to evaluate your case and discuss legal defense options.
- The court will give you another date for a pretrial conference where you can discuss your case in detail with the prosecution and your attorney, and possibly work out a deal, or file motions and start preparing for trial.
